SELECTED WORK / STANDARD BANK / 2017–2018

A bank.
A belief.
A bigger next.

A body of work built around human possibility. From the first brave step to a life-changing next, four campaigns that took banking into people’s ambitions, conversations and living rooms.

CHAPTER 01 / CULTURE INTO ACTION

Make one day
today.

“One day” is where a lot of ambition waits. This campaign invited young South Africans to make a public commitment and take their first step. Films with cultural voices, bold pledge artwork and a mobile tool turned a brand message into something people could make their own.

CAMPAIGN AT A GLANCE

Challenge
Move ambition from “one day” to action.
Audience
Young South Africans shaping their own futures.
Channels
Film · Mobile pledge tool · Social · Photography

01 / INSIGHT

The distance between wanting a different future and starting one is often emotional. Fear, uncertainty and the comfort of postponing can keep a meaningful ambition permanently in “one day”. A bank talking about progress needed to meet people at that first, very human barrier.

02 / IDEA

Make One Day #Today. Turn an abstract promise about the future into a personal commitment in the present. Put the invitation in the hands of South African cultural voices, then give everyone a way to write, own and share their next step.

03 / EXECUTION

A spark phase introduced the provocation through film. Stories about fear, vulnerability and taking the first step gave it depth. The mobile pledge tool made participation personal, while campaign portraits and social artwork carried individual commitments into a shared visual language.

CHAPTER 02 / THE BRAND PLATFORM

What’s
your next?

A simple question with room for a whole country’s ambitions. The platform put the customer’s next milestone at the centre of the conversation, with Standard Bank alongside them. A distinctive visual language carried that invitation through film, outdoor and brand communication, and opened the door to the campaigns that followed.

CAMPAIGN AT A GLANCE

Challenge
Make a banking brand relevant to real-life progress.
Audience
People and businesses imagining their next milestone.
Channels
Brand film · Outdoor · Print · Social · Motion

01 / INSIGHT

People do not experience progress as a list of banking products. They see a home, a business, an education or the freedom to choose what happens next. Starting with those ambitions creates a more human conversation than starting with the bank.

02 / IDEA

Ask “What’s Your Next?” A short, open question that gives the customer the lead and positions Standard Bank alongside their journey. The idea is broad enough for a national brand, but specific enough to speak to one person, one place or one decision.

03 / EXECUTION

A distinctive typographic system gave the question a recognisable voice across film, city-scale outdoor and campaign layouts. Messages were adapted to locations and life choices, with short animated films extending the conversation. The platform became the creative springboard for Your Next Million and My Fearless Next.

THE IDEA HAD ROOM TO GROW

One question.
Many possibilities.

A brand platform becomes powerful when it can travel. Here, the language of “next” extended from personal aspiration to a television game show and an entrepreneurial challenge, while keeping the same human invitation at its heart.

CHAPTER 03 / BANKING BECOMES ENTERTAINMENT

Your next
million.

A banking proposition with the scale and excitement of prime-time television. Your Next Million brought Standard Bank’s Gold Card into a SABC1 game show. The world around it was designed to work everywhere: a confident gold identity, studio and set design, city-scale outdoor, airport branding, press and social.

CAMPAIGN AT A GLANCE

Challenge
Bring the Gold Card proposition into popular culture.
Audience
South African consumers and SABC1 viewers.
Channels
Television · Set design · Outdoor · Press · Social

01 / INSIGHT

The possibility of changing your life is more compelling when people can see it happen. A banking offer could become something an audience follows, talks about and roots for, rather than another product message competing for attention.

02 / IDEA

Your Next Million. Take the ambition behind “next” into a television game show, building a world around the chance of a life-changing win. Make the brand part of the entertainment itself, from the identity to the stage where the story unfolds.

03 / EXECUTION

A dimensional gold identity connected the Gold Card to the show. That language carried through set concepts and technical drawings into the live studio. Building wraps, M1 silos, airport branding, press and social took the same invitation beyond the screen and into everyday journeys.

CHAPTER 04 / AMBITION WITH SOMETHING BEHIND IT

My fearless
next.

For an entrepreneur, leaving a salary behind can be the biggest barrier to starting. My Fearless Next turned that tension into a business challenge, with mentorship and the chance to win a year’s salary. Stories from mentors encouraged participation; a WhatsApp boot camp carried useful knowledge beyond the television audience.

CAMPAIGN AT A GLANCE

Challenge
Help side-hustlers take the leap into their own business.
Audience
Aspiring entrepreneurs balancing a salary and a venture.
Channels
Film · Outdoor · Digital application · WhatsApp · Television

01 / INSIGHT

For a would-be entrepreneur, ambition is rarely the missing ingredient. The fear of losing a dependable income can be the real brake. Encouragement becomes more credible when a brand helps address the practical risk behind that fear.

02 / IDEA

My Fearless Next. Give entrepreneurial ambition something concrete behind it: mentorship, a business challenge and the chance to win a year’s salary. Make the leap from side hustle to main hustle feel like a supported next step.

03 / EXECUTION

A confident campaign lockup travelled across murals, bus shelters, billboards and film. A digital application journey invited participation, while mentor stories and a WhatsApp boot camp made the learning accessible beyond the television programme. The identity held the outdoor, mobile and broadcast experience together.
